Title of the project:

SZIA Színházi Ifjúsági Alkotóműhely

Purpose of the program to be supported:

The SZIA Theater program of the Creative Theater Workshop for Youth is expecting primarily disadvantaged young people living in child protection and across the border to its unique all-arts program. The participating young people can get acquainted with the opportunities offered by the theater, music and creative industries, while together with them, a new, contemporary play is created every season, which they then bring to stage.
We are raising funds for the realisation of the performance of the 2022/2023 season: to be able to reimburse the travel or meals during the rehearsal process for whoever is selected for the program, so it is not the matter of finances whether they can go through the season, and stay with us in the future. After all, the SZIA Theater is more than a theater! The key message is that there is a supportive community that will stay with them in the long run and there is a place where anything is possible.

The need / problem the project offers a solution for:

In many cases, young people joining the SZIA Theater program have difficulty finding funding for rehearsals or for the multi-day programs. Many people are already working in addition to studying, so the time spent on our program deprives them of the opportunity to earn money. Others come from a great distance, e.g. across the border, so traveling is a big expense for them. Our goal is to ensure that no applicant is left out of this program because the additional costs of participating – even if the program itself is free – is placing an excessive financial burden on either their family or foster parents, or on themselves, if they already living on their own.

Planned activities in the project, and the expected schedule:

In each season of the SZIA Theater, the structure of the program will take place according to the following schedule:
Call for applications (15 May – 22 June 2022)
Online submission of applications (expected number of applicants between 150-300 people)
Consideration of the applications, invitation of 60 people selected in the first round to the 2nd round (1st live selection: scheduled date August 2022)
First live selection day – getting to know each other, drama sessions
Summer camp (1 week, about 30 people – with support from other sources)
Residential weekend (3 days, 2 nights, approx. 30 people – scheduled for September 2022)
Formation of the final company (approx. 25 people), writing of the play (October 2022 – January 2023)
Rehearsal process: one-day rehearsals, according to the planned rehearsal schedule (first semester 2023)
Main rehearsal week: according to the regular rehearsal period + residential main rehearsal period (minimum 3 days, 2 nights)
Theater premiere (Scheduled for June 2023, Budapest)
Performances across the country and across the border. Planned locations: Budapest, Békéscsaba, Szolnok, Komárom, Somorja (SK), Kézdivásárhely (RO), in the second half of 2023.

Planned budget of the project, in brief (cost types and amounts):

From the amount raised through Swimathon, we plan to fund:
Opening event: 60 people, meals, approx. HUF 150,000 (HUF 2,500 / person)
Residential weekend: Reimbursement of travel expenses; accommodation and meals (approx. 30 people) approx. 450,000 HUF (15,000 HUF / person)
Support for travel expenses during the rehearsal period: Those arriving from across the border (approx. 10 people, Highlands, Transylvania, Transcarpathia) approx. HUF 400,000
Intra-country travellers (reimbursement of fuel costs or rail / bus costs) approx. HUF 300,000
Travel, accommodation and meals for the main rehearsal week and premier are approx. 600,000 HUF
Travel costs for additional performances are approx. 5×100,000 HUF = 500,000 HUF

TOTAL: 2.400.000 HUF

Intended use of the support collected at Swimathon:

We will use the amount of the raised funds to enable the young people developing under our wings to make the most of the healing experience of the theater without having to deal with the difficulties of the outside world. So we want to help with their travel, their meals and their accommodation during rehearsals. If necessary, we also want to support their accompanying persons in the same way, as they are very much needed for the implementation of the program. We want everyone who takes part in the rehearsals to receive quality care in addition to the experiences. It would be good if during the drama pedagogy class they didn’t think about how and from what they would get home, and didn’t wonder if they had enough pocket money for a lunch at the theater buffet…

What impact is expected from the implementation of the project and how will it be measured?

The previous season of the SZIA Theater proved that
the company of the SZIA is a community whose members can experience security, permanence and that they are valuable and important,
with our program we can support them in their difficulties and encourage them to further develop their strengths.
With the help of Swimathon, we want more young people to join our program and that the participants of the second season are going to have as unforgettable experiences as the former members of the company. By listening to the audio play titled “Watch where you step!” completed in the first season, everyone can see what great young people we work with.
Please see: www.vigyazzhovalepsz.hu, but it is also worth visiting one of the sound play theater performances of the “Watch where you step!” sound play, spiced with a drama session that is still on the road – the fun of the young people participating there and the thoughts they express reveal everything about the greatness of the play and the SZIA program!
