Title of the project:

ULE Construction Camp

Purpose of the program to be supported:

During the summer construction camp, we will renovate two apartments together with the BME (Budapest Technical University) architecture students and our volunteers. One apartment is a home managed by our Housing Agency and the other is a municipal apartment in poor condition.
A couple, raising their granddaughter will move into the municipal apartment, the tenants of the other apartment will be selected later, but we would like to involve the future residents in the renovation process as much as possible. After moving in, we help the once homeless tenants with intensive social work, and we want to provide them with housing on the long run.

The need / problem the project offers a solution for:

In recent years, the housing crisis in Hungary has become more severe and affects more and more people. The current homeless care system is unable to provide a sustainable way out for homeless people. We believe that safe housing is a prerequisite for a dignified life, which is why we have set ourselves the goal of providing independent housing for homeless people. Hungarian housing policy does not deal with the solution of housing poverty, and it appears as a marginalized topic in public discourse, which is why we would like our campaign to reach as many people as possible and get to know our work.

Planned activities in the project, and the expected schedule:

After the takeover of the municipal apartment, according to our plans the construction works can start in June, after the Swimathon campaign. We will start with demolition, then continue with professional work and finish with volunteer days. The planned activity will take place in several stages, first we will complete the renovation of the municipal apartment in 3 stages, and then we will paint the property of the Housing Agency. The expected date for the move-ins may be late September or mid-October, depending on when the work may begin. Renovation of the municipal apartment is expected to take 12-14 weeks, painting of the Housing Agency apartment will take 2 weeks.

Expected schedule:
End of May 2022: takeover of the municipal apartment
June 2022: Beginning of intensive social work with families moving in
June 2022: start of construction work
We will renovate the municipal apartment in 12-14 weeks
2 weeks of painting the apartment of our Housing Agency
End of September to mid-October 2022: moving ins

Planned budget of the project, in brief (cost types and amounts):

renovation costs, material costs
wages of external skilled workers
wages of social workers

Total: HUF 4,000,000

Intended use of the support collected at Swimathon:

We want to raise 4 million forints during the Swimathon campaign. The money would cover the costs of renovating the two flats, which, in case of the municipal property are high due to the poor condition of the flat. In addition to procuring the construction materials needed for the renovation, we would like to enlist the help of skilled workers for more difficult renovation works. In addition, social work is an important part of our projects, as that enables our tenants to stay in the homes long-term.

What impact is expected from the implementation of the project and how will it be measured?

We hope that the families who move in will finally be safe, that with the help of social work their housing will become sustainable, so there will be a place they can call home. In addition, we expect that the Swimathon campaign will address homelessness and housing poverty as a real problem, that our Association’s activities will once again reach many people, and that we will be able to help more people in the future with our housing poverty alleviation programs.
